Project India Medical Center Dental Unit
Inde Mori Andhra Pradesh

The India Project began in 2004. The hospital of Mori, located in the delta of the Godavari River, Andhra Pradesh, southern India, now includes a dental department. The area of Mori is mainly populated by the "Untouchable" or "Pariah" (Dalit) caste representing the lowest social class in India. They are social and political outcasts. In spite of the official abolition of the caste system at the time of independence in 1947, this social group, till this day, still suffers from exclusion, contempt and the majority of these people live beneath the poverty line.

History
Dr. André Mermoud, ophtalmologist in Lausanne, created his association "Vision for All" to build a hospital in Mori and to supply assistance to the needy. At his request, Swiss Dental Clinics Group decided to finance and control the project of a dental department.

Dentists and dental assistants of the Swiss Dental Clinics Group went on site to install the material donated by a retired Swiss dentist as well as new material bought locally. An Indian dentist and two assistants were recruited and employed. The launch of the dental unit was made in collaboration with the Swiss dentists of our group. Since July 1st, 2004, the dental unit is perfectly functional.

Planned actions
  • Complete installation of two operatories at the end of 2006.
  • Recruitment of dentists and assistants.
  • Medical and financial supervision by regular visits (on a purely voluntary basis) of dentists and dental assistants of the Swiss Dental Clinics Group.
  • Setting-up a prophylaxis team in 2005.

Charge for poor patients
The dental department of the hospital of Mori provides free care for the needy. The richer patients will contribute, by the price of their treatment, to finance the care given to the poorest people.
In order to approach the greatest number of people requiring care, a bus with a team of dentists and ophtalmologists visits the remote areas to carry out screenings of the impoverished populations. The patients who need treatment are invited to go to the hospital of Mori.
